Dissertation Discussion: The Horror

Have you ever wondered why more than 84% of candidates feel clumsy when it comes to their dissertation discussion chapter? When we tried to find out the answers we came across that we didn’t find the unprecedented possibilities. In fact, it was the common root problem that is plaguing the candidates’ desire to carry on with their dissertations.

The answer that we were suspecting was HORROR of not able to finishing off the dissertation.

We interacted with lots of research candidates and professors from University of Birmingham to find out the root cause of the problem and there I met Professor Mr. Jochen Bub.

He told us that students are marred with various “horrors” that is resulting in their losing hopes at discussion chapter:

  • Inability to interpret and explain their research results:
SOLUTION: Candidates should be well aware of their research topic. The most common reason behind their inability to interpret could be surrogate information error. This type of error could be avoided through exploratory research. Through exploratory research only candidates will be able to gain enough confidence to interpret their findings.
  • Mismatch between results and hypothesis:
SOLUTION: Researchers should be crystal clear about their research aims and objectives. Their results should match with their hypothesis. You can say that the hypothesis is a temporary statement of what they think they are likely to find out in their research and for that following things should be considered:

    • The questions they need to answer.
    • Their methodology and the time scale in which they propose to carry out the work.

Hence their results and findings should correlate with their hypothesis.

  • Wrong assumption made by researchers:
SOLUTION: Sometimes the assumptions made by students are completely different from their objectives of the research. By doing proper data analysis they can work out their assumptions that they can attest with their objectives of carrying out the research. Citing prior research studies forms the basis of your literature review. Before assuming this to be true, though, consult with your guide! Note again that discovering a limitation can serve as an important opportunity to identify new gaps in the literature and to describe the need for further research.
  • Shying away from relating their research with earlier studies:
SOLUTION: This is a common propensity among students when they often try to escape by not relating their research with earlier studies. Candidates need to make most out of the earlier studies and should make their endeavor to find the literature gap. Acknowledgement of limitations of a research also provides you with an opportunity to demonstrate that you have thought critically about the research problem, understood the relevant literature published about it, and correctly assessed the methods chosen for studying the problem. A prime objective of the research process is not only discovering new knowledge but to also confront assumptions and explore what we don’t know.
  • Inability to summarize the results:
SOLUTION: only through proper exploratory research and data analysis, candidates will be able to summarize their findings and can interpret the result in a better way.

I believe that above mentioned nuggets of information will help students overcome their fear of backing off from their dissertation discussion.
